This cliffside abode is a captivating story of stripping away layers, and embarking on a journey of rediscovery and returning the home to its authentic roots. Embracing the serene seaside locale and architectural heritage, the interior design becomes a subtle reflection of the home's shell and the timeless integrity of its surroundings. With meticulous attention to materiality and a dedication to honoring the timestamp of its coastal setting, the final result is a harmonious blend of past and present, evoking a sense of timeless tranquility.
THE KITCHEN
Our client’s one request was to have a white kitchen. “A white kitchen never tires—it’s like white linens,” says principal Stephanie Capawana. Embracing classic European techniques, we designed a space featuring a french strié-finished ten-foot island paired with calacatta gold marble countertops and backsplash. The neo-classicism crown molding serves as the icing on the cake, adding a touch of elegance. Given the client’s years of collecting white and pewter dishware, we knew they were the perfect candidate for open glass cabinetry, showcasing their collection beautifully.
One of the first times I visited this home, our client graciously hosted us on the cobblestone terrace situated at the back of the property. As we enjoyed warm Belgian waffles topped with a generous scoop of French vanilla gelato, we discussed their dreams for the property—a white, floor-to-ceiling kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances, designed to host their children and grandchildren. They envisioned a home familiarity in style and colors that reflected the charm of the area they resided in, a timeless and inviting space that felt like stepping back in time when you walked through the door.
After brunch, our client led us through their home, revealing small corners where the grandchildren could play house and pointing out the hand-written measurements of their kids, now grown, and their grandchildren on the doorframe. She showed us her collection of beautiful porcelain teacups with matching saucers, along with china, glassware, and pewter passed down through generations. She also shared stories of her late father, who had exquisite taste in fashion and interiors. Maurese owned clothing stores across the country, one of which Ralph Lauren himself frequented.
This classic bathroom is situated off the granddaughter’s room, designed to bathe the grandchildren in a space that's neutral in color and materials. The soft, muted palette creates a serene atmosphere, making it the perfect place for relaxing baths before bedtime. With elegant fixtures and timeless design, the bathroom blends seamlessly with the rest of the home's aesthetic, offering a tranquil retreat for the little ones.
